[Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Winter Olympics] Xinhua News Agency: The Power of TCM Behind Eileen Gu’s Gold Medal

On February 8, at the Beijing Winter Olympics freestyle skiing women’s big air event, Eileen Gu staged a stunning comeback to clinch a miraculous gold medal. This marked China’s first-ever Olympic gold in a women’s snow sports event.

Eileen Gu has made history for China in winter sports, thanks to the steadfast medical support provided by Sichuan-based experts in traditional Chinese medicine orthopedics.

Zhu Jiangwei, attending physician at the Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital and team physician for China’s freestyle skiing big air and slopestyle teams at the Winter Olympics, traveled with the team to Austria, Switzerland, the United States, and other locations from October 2021 to January 2022 to provide on-site medical support and ensure optimal preparation for the Games.

During this period, Eileen Gu’s team made multiple visits to the national training camp’s base after training sessions and competitions to seek medical rehabilitation treatment. In light of Eileen Gu’s physical characteristics, Zhu Jiangwei employed specialized techniques from the Sichuan Zheng School of Traditional Chinese Orthopedics to provide appropriate physical therapy, guided her through functional exercises, and offered protective preventive measures, all aimed at minimizing the risk of injury during her off-site training and competition periods and laying a solid foundation for her to compete at the Winter Olympics in peak condition.

Currently, Zhu Jiangwei and several medical experts from the Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital are providing specialized traditional Chinese medicine–based orthopedic medical support to Chinese athletes at the Winter Olympics.

“Sichuan Zheng-style Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedics is one of the major schools in TCM orthopedics and traumatology. Through its clinical diagnosis and treatment of bone injuries and sports-related trauma, it has developed a distinctive academic system that integrates martial arts medicine with conventional TCM and combines physical therapy with medical practice, making it particularly well-suited to helping athletes rapidly regain their strength and to preventing and effectively treating injuries and pain,” said Zhu Jiangwei.

According to reports, Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital has been engaged in the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries since the 1950s, providing medical care and treatment to numerous renowned athletes over the years. Since the start of preparations for the Beijing Winter Olympics, the hospital has dispatched a total of 24 medical experts to provide on-site medical services for seven national training teams in ice and snow sports, including the figure skating team and the alpine skiing team.
