Detailed Introduction

[Source] The dried roots of Dipsacus asperoides, a plant of the family Dipsacaceae.

[Note] 1. Color: The outer bark of Dipsacus is grayish-brown (fresh, whole specimens have yellow-brown bark, while processed slices are generally grayish-brown)—this distinguishes it from Euphorbia pekinensis.

2. Cortex and pith flavor: ① The cortex has a lighter color at the margins (brown), while the inner layer is darker (brown or dark brown, with a greenish tinge); ② The xylem exhibits dense radial patterns, with a pith in the center (in parts devoid of rays, pith is rare in dicot roots); ③ The taste is bitter, slightly sweet, and then astringent.

【Functions】Bitter and pungent, slightly warm. Tonifies the liver and kidneys, strengthens the sinews and bones, stops bleeding and secures the fetus, and promotes healing of injuries and fractures.
