Speech at the Rally Marking the Centenary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China

Today is a momentous and solemn day in the history of the Communist Party of China and in the history of the Chinese nation. Here, we gather in grand ceremony to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China together with the entire Party and all the people of all ethnic groups across the country, to review the glorious journey of the Party’s century-long struggle, and to look forward to the bright prospects for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

First of all, on behalf of the Party Central Committee, I would like to extend warm festive greetings to all members of the Communist Party of China!

On behalf of the Party and the people, I solemnly declare that, through the unremitting efforts of the entire Party and all ethnic groups across the country, we have achieved the First Centenary Goal: we have comprehensively built a moderately prosperous society on Chinese soil and historically resolved the problem of absolute poverty. We are now marching with high spirits toward the Second Centenary Goal of fully building a modern socialist country. This is the great glory of the Chinese nation; this is the great glory of the Chinese people; and this is the great glory of the Communist Party of China.

Comrades and friends!

The Chinese nation is a great nation in the world, with a civilization spanning more than 5,000 years and having made indelible contributions to the progress of human civilization. Following the Opium War of 1840, China gradually descended into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, during which the country was humiliated, the people suffered, and the nation’s civilization was tarnished, subjecting the Chinese nation to unprecedented calamities. Since then, the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has become the greatest dream of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation.

In order to avert national peril, the Chinese people rose up in resistance, and patriotic intellectuals and reformers fervently advocated for change. The Taiping Rebellion, the Hundred Days’ Reform, the Boxer Uprising, and the Xinhai Revolution followed one after another, with a succession of national salvation plans being put forward—yet each ultimately ended in failure. China was thus in urgent need of new ideas to guide the movement for national salvation and of new organizations to unite revolutionary forces.

The thunderous cannon shot of the October Revolution brought Marxism-Leninism to China. It was in the great awakening of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, and through the close integration of Marxism-Leninism with the Chinese workers’ movement, that the Communist Party of China came into being. The founding of the Communist Party of China was a momentous event of epoch-making significance, profoundly altering the direction and course of the Chinese nation’s development since modern times, profoundly transforming the future and destiny of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, and profoundly reshaping the trends and patterns of world development.

From the very moment of its founding, the Communist Party of China has made it its original aspiration and mission to secure happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation. Over the past century, all the struggles, sacrifices, and creations undertaken by the Party in unity with the Chinese people have ultimately converged on one central theme: the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

—In order to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the Communist Party of China has united and led the Chinese people in heroic struggles and unyielding perseverance, thereby achieving the great triumph of the New Democratic Revolution. Through the Northern Expedition, the Land Revolution War, the War of Resistance Against Japan, and the Liberation War, we waged armed revolution against armed counter-revolution, overthrew the three great mountains of imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat-capitalism, established the People’s Republic of China in which the people are the masters of the country, and realized national independence and the liberation of the people. The victory of the New Democratic Revolution completely brought to an end the history of semi-colonial and semi-feudal society in old China, completely put an end to the state of disunity and fragmentation that had long plagued the country, and completely abolished the unequal treaties imposed on China by the imperialist powers as well as all imperialist privileges in China, thus creating the fundamental social conditions for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. With courageous and tenacious struggle, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people solemnly declared to the world: the Chinese people have stood up; the era in which the Chinese nation was at the mercy of others and subjected to humiliation is gone forever!

—In order to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the Communist Party of China has united and led the Chinese people in relying on their own efforts and striving with determination, thereby achieving remarkable accomplishments in the socialist revolution and construction. Through the socialist revolution, we abolished the feudal system of exploitation and oppression that had persisted in China for thousands of years, established the basic socialist system, advanced socialist construction, and triumphed over the subversive sabotage and armed provocations of imperialism and hegemonism. As a result, the most extensive and profound social transformation in the history of the Chinese nation was accomplished; the vast, impoverished, and populous Eastern country made a giant leap into socialist society; and the fundamental political prerequisites and institutional foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation were laid. The Communist Party of China and the Chinese people, through their courageous and tenacious struggle, have solemnly declared to the world that the Chinese people are not only adept at dismantling the old world but also skilled at building a new one; that only socialism can save China, and that only socialism with Chinese characteristics can develop China!

—To realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the Communist Party of China has united and led the Chinese people in emancipating their minds and forging ahead with boldness and determination, thereby achieving remarkable accomplishments in reform and opening up and in the cause of socialist modernization. We have accomplished a momentous historical turning point of far-reaching significance in the Party’s history since the founding of New China; established the Party’s basic line for the primary stage of socialism; unswervingly advanced reform and opening up; overcome risks and challenges from all quarters; and pioneered, upheld, defended, and developed socialism with Chinese characteristics. As a result, we have brought about a historic transformation: from a highly centralized planned economy to a vibrant socialist market economy, and from relative isolation or semi-isolation to all-round opening up; achieved a historic breakthrough by surging from a state of relatively backward productive forces to becoming the world’s second-largest economy; and realized a historic leap in people’s living standards—from mere subsistence to overall moderate prosperity and onward toward comprehensive moderate prosperity. All these achievements have provided institutional guarantees brimming with new vitality and material conditions for rapid development, thus laying a solid foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The Communist Party of China and the Chinese people, through their courageous and tenacious struggle, have solemnly declared to the world that reform and opening-up is the crucial move that has determined the future and destiny of contemporary China, enabling China to make giant strides in keeping pace with the times!

—To realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the Communist Party of China has united and led the Chinese people in pursuing self-confidence and self-reliance, upholding fundamental principles while fostering innovation, and exercising overall leadership over the great struggle, the great project, the great cause, and the great dream, thereby achieving remarkable accomplishments in socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era. Since the 18th National Congress of the Party, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era. We have upheld and strengthened the Party’s overall leadership, coordinated the promotion of the Five-Sphere Integrated Plan and the Four-Pronged Comprehensive Strategy, consolidated and improved the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, advanced the modernization of China’s system and capacity for governance, governed the Party in accordance with regulations, and established a relatively complete system of internal Party rules. We have overcome a series of major risks and challenges, achieved the First Centenary Goal, and defined the strategic plan for realizing the Second Centenary Goal. As a result, historic achievements have been made and historic transformations have taken place in the cause of the Party and the country, providing more robust institutional guarantees, a stronger material foundation, and a more vigorous spiritual force for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. With courageous and tenacious struggle, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people have solemnly declared to the world that the Chinese nation has accomplished a great leap—from standing up and growing prosperous to becoming strong—and that the journey toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process!

Over the past century, the Communist Party of China has united and led the Chinese people, embodying the fearless spirit of “With great aspirations born of countless sacrifices, we dare to transform the sun and moon into a new heaven,” thereby writing the most magnificent epic in the millennia-long history of the Chinese nation. The great path blazed, the great cause forged, and the great achievements attained over this century will surely be inscribed in the annals of the development of the Chinese nation and in the annals of the progress of human civilization!

A century ago, the pioneers of the Communist Party of China founded the Party and forged the great spirit of Party building—upholding truth and ideals, staying true to our original aspiration and mission, fearlessly sacrificing ourselves and fighting bravely, remaining loyal to the Party and serving the people wholeheartedly. This spirit is the very source of the Communist Party of China’s vitality.

Over the past century, the Communist Party of China has carried forward the great spirit of its founding, forged a spiritual lineage of Chinese communists through prolonged struggle, and cultivated a distinct political character. History flows on unceasingly, and the spirit is passed down from one generation to the next. We must continue to uphold our glorious traditions, carry forward the red bloodline, and forever inherit and further develop the great spirit of the Party’s founding!

Comrades and friends!

Over the past century, all our achievements have been the result of the united struggle of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese people, and the Chinese nation. The Chinese Communists, with Comrades Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao as their principal representatives, have accomplished monumental feats that will be recorded in history for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We pay them our highest respects!

At this very moment, we deeply mourn and cherish the memory of the elder revolutionary leaders—Comrades Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yun, and others—who made monumental contributions to China’s revolution, construction, and reform, as well as to the founding, consolidation, and development of the Communist Party of China. We also deeply mourn the revolutionary martyrs who heroically sacrificed their lives in the cause of establishing, defending, and building New China, and the revolutionary heroes who bravely gave their lives for reform and opening up and for the socialist modernization drive. Moreover, we deeply remember all the patriotic and righteous men and women who, since modern times, have fought tenaciously for national independence and the liberation of the people. Their outstanding achievements for the motherland and the nation will be forever recorded in the annals of history; their noble spirit will be eternally enshrined in the hearts of the people.

The people are the creators of history and the true heroes. On behalf of the Party Central Committee, I wish to express our highest respect to the broad ranks of workers, farmers, and intellectuals across the country; to the democratic parties and non-affiliates, to all people’s organizations and patriotic figures from all sectors of society; to the officers and soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army, the People’s Armed Police, the public security organs, and the fire and rescue services; to all socialist laborers; and to the vast membership of the United Front. I also extend our sincere greetings to our compatriots in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan, as well as to our overseas Chinese community. Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the peoples and friends of all countries who have maintained friendly relations with the Chinese people and who have shown concern for and support for China’s revolutionary, developmental, and reform endeavors.

It is easy to harbor original aspirations, but difficult to remain true to them throughout. By learning from history, we can understand the rise and fall of dynasties. We must use history to illuminate the present and to look far into the future: by examining the Communist Party of China’s century-long struggle, we can clearly see why we were able to achieve success in the past and thoroughly grasp how we can continue to succeed in the future. In this way, as we embark on a new journey, we will be even more resolute and conscious in keeping our original aspirations and mission firmly in mind and in forging a brighter future.

—— To learn from history and forge a new future, we must uphold the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China. The key to doing China’s affairs well lies with the Party. The more than 180 years of modern Chinese history, the 100 years since the founding of the Communist Party of China, and the over 70 years since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China all amply demonstrate that without the Communist Party of China there would be no New China, and there would be no great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. History and the people have chosen the Communist Party of China. The leadership of the Communist Party of China is the most essential feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the greatest strength of the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the very foundation and lifeline of the Party and the country, and what the interests and destiny of all ethnic groups in China are bound up with.

On the new journey ahead, we must uphold the Party’s overall leadership, continuously improve its leadership, strengthen our consciousness of the need to maintain high ideological and political alignment with the Party Central Committee, firmly uphold our confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and ensure that we “safeguard the core” of the Party Central Committee. We must bear in mind what matters most to the country, constantly enhance the Party’s capacity for scientific, democratic, and law-based governance, and fully bring into play the Party’s central role as the leader that oversees the overall situation and coordinates all sides!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future, we must unite and lead the Chinese people in their unrelenting pursuit of a better life. The country is the people, and the people are the country; to win and safeguard the country is, in essence, to win and safeguard the hearts of the people. The Communist Party of China draws its roots from the people, its lifeblood from the people, and its strength from the people. The Party always represents the fundamental interests of the broadest masses of the people, shares their joys and sorrows, and stands by them through thick and thin; it has no special interests of its own and never represents the interests of any interest group, any powerful clique, or any privileged class. Any attempt to separate the Communist Party of China from the Chinese people or to set them against one another will never succeed! The more than 95 million members of the Communist Party of China will not tolerate it, nor will the over 1.4 billion Chinese people.

On this new journey, we must rely firmly on the people to create history, uphold the fundamental principle of serving the people wholeheartedly, stand firmly on the people’s side, implement the Party’s mass line, respect the pioneering spirit of the people, put into practice the development philosophy centered on the people, develop whole-process people’s democracy, safeguard social fairness and justice, focus on resolving the problems of unbalanced and inadequate development as well as the urgent, difficult, and pressing concerns of the people, and promote more prominent and substantive progress in the all-round development of individuals and the common prosperity of all the people!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires continued advancement of the sinicization of Marxism. Marxism is the fundamental guiding ideology upon which our Party and our country are founded; it is the soul and banner of our Party. The Communist Party of China upholds the basic tenets of Marxism, adheres to the principle of seeking truth from facts, proceeds from China’s actual conditions, discerns the overarching trends of our times, seizes the initiative in history, undertakes arduous exploration, and continuously advances the sinicization and modernization of Marxism, thereby guiding the Chinese people in constantly advancing the great social revolution. The reason why the Communist Party of China has been able to succeed and why socialism with Chinese characteristics is so effective ultimately lies in the fact that Marxism works!

On the new journey ahead, we must uphold Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Important Thought of the Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development; fully implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; steadfastly integrate the fundamental principles of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with China’s fine traditional culture; employ Marxism to observe the times, grasp the trends of the times, and lead the times; and continue to develop contemporary Chinese Marxism and 21st-century Marxism!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires steadfastly upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics. “Blazing our own trail” is the fundamental tenet underpinning the Party’s entire body of theory and practice, and it is also the historic conclusion drawn from the Party’s century-long struggle. Socialism with Chinese characteristics is the fundamental achievement attained by the Party and the people through countless hardships and tremendous sacrifices, and it is the right path for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. By upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics, we have promoted the coordinated development of material, political, spiritual, social, and ecological civilizations, thereby forging a new path of Chinese modernization and giving rise to a new form of human civilization.

On the new journey ahead, we must uphold the Party’s basic theory, basic line, and basic policy; coordinate the promotion of the Five-Sphere Integrated Plan and the Four-Pronged Comprehensive Strategy; comprehensively deepen reform and opening up; ground ourselves in the new stage of development; fully, accurately, and comprehensively implement the new development philosophy; foster a new development pattern; promote high-quality development; advance self-reliance and strength in science and technology; ensure that the people are the masters of the country; uphold law-based governance; uphold the socialist core value system; ensure and improve people’s wellbeing in the course of development; uphold harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature; and synergistically advance the goals of common prosperity for the people, national strength, and a beautiful China.

The Chinese nation has forged a splendid civilization over more than 5,000 years of historical development, and the Communist Party of China has accumulated a century of struggle and more than seven decades of experience in governing and rejuvenating the country. We are committed to actively learning from and drawing on all the beneficial achievements of human civilization, and we welcome all constructive suggestions and well-intentioned criticism. However, we will never accept patronizing lecturing or condescending admonishments as if we were “the teacher” dictating terms! The Communist Party of China and the Chinese people will continue to stride forward with confidence on the path we have chosen, firmly holding the destiny of China’s development and progress in our own hands!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires accelerating the modernization of national defense and the armed forces. A strong country must have a strong military; only a strong military can ensure national security. Upholding the principle that the Party commands the gun and building a people’s army of our own are irrefutable truths forged in the Party’s bloody struggles. The People’s Army has rendered immortal service to the Party and the people, serving as a steadfast pillar in safeguarding the red homeland and upholding national dignity, as well as a powerful force for maintaining regional and world peace.

On the new journey ahead, we must fully implement the Party’s Thought on Strengthening the Military for the New Era and the military strategic guidelines for the new era; uphold the Party’s absolute leadership over the People’s Armed Forces; follow the path of strengthening the military with Chinese characteristics; and comprehensively advance political building of the armed forces, strengthening the military through reform, science and technology, talent development, and law-based governance. We will build the People’s Armed Forces into a world-class military, so as to safeguard China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests with even greater capabilities and more reliable means!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires continuously advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Peace, amity, and harmony have been the ideals pursued and passed down by the Chinese nation for more than 5,000 years; such a mindset—seeking to invade others or seek hegemony—is simply not in the DNA of the Chinese people. The Communist Party of China is committed to the future and destiny of humanity and works hand in hand with all progressive forces around the world. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order!

On the new journey ahead, we must hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit; pursue an independent foreign policy of peace; steadfastly follow the path of peaceful development; work to foster a new type of international relations; strive to build a community with a shared future for mankind; and promote high-quality joint efforts under the Belt and Road Initiative, so that China’s new development can offer new opportunities to the world. The Communist Party of China will continue to join with all peace-loving countries and peoples in upholding the common values of humanity—peace, development, equity, justice, democracy, and freedom—adhering to cooperation rather than confrontation, openness rather than isolation, and mutual benefit and win-win outcomes rather than zero-sum games. We will oppose hegemonism and power politics and push the wheels of history forward toward a brighter future!

The Chinese people are a people who uphold justice and fear no aggression; the Chinese nation is one that takes profound pride in and unwavering confidence in itself. The Chinese people have never bullied, oppressed, or enslaved the peoples of other countries—never have they, never do they, and never will they. At the same time, the Chinese people will never permit any external force to bully, oppress, or enslave us. Anyone who dares to attempt such an act will surely meet with crushing defeat before the iron wall of flesh and blood forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires waging a great struggle characterized by many new historical features. The courage to struggle and the determination to achieve victory constitute the Communist Party of China’s invincible spiritual strength. Realizing the great dream requires tenacious striving and unremitting endeavor. Today, we are closer than ever in history—and more confident and capable—of achieving the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation; at the same time, we must be prepared to make even more arduous and strenuous efforts.

On this new journey, we must strengthen our sense of potential danger and remain ever vigilant in times of peace; we must fully implement the Overall National Security Concept, coordinate development with security, and integrate the strategic overall picture of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with the unprecedented changes in the world over the past century. We must gain a profound understanding of the new characteristics and new requirements arising from the evolving principal contradiction in Chinese society, as well as the new contradictions and new challenges posed by the complex and ever-changing international environment. We must dare to struggle and be adept at struggling—blazing trails through mountains and building bridges across rivers—and courageously overcome all risks and challenges!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires strengthening the great unity of all Chinese sons and daughters. Throughout its century-long struggle, the Communist Party of China has consistently placed the United Front in a prominent position, continuously consolidating and developing the broadest possible united front, uniting all forces that can be united and mobilizing all positive factors that can be mobilized, so as to maximize the pooling of strength for common endeavor. The patriotic united front is an important strategic tool for the CPC to unite all Chinese sons and daughters at home and abroad in realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

On this new journey, we must uphold great unity and broad solidarity, balance unity with diversity, strengthen ideological and political guidance, build broad consensus, attract talented individuals from all over the world, strive to identify the greatest common denominator and draw the largest possible circle of shared aspirations, and create a vibrant situation in which all Chinese sons and daughters at home and abroad think as one and work together with one heart and one mind, thereby pooling tremendous strength to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!

—— Drawing lessons from history and forging a new future requires continuously advancing the new great project of Party building. The courage to engage in self-revolution is a defining hallmark that sets the Communist Party of China apart from all other political parties. The reason our Party has remained vigorous and full of vitality after enduring countless trials and tribulations is, crucially, our unwavering commitment to exercising strict governance over the Party in all respects and to ensuring that the Party always stays true to its original aspiration and mission. By continuously addressing the risks and challenges it has faced in each historical period, we have ensured that the Party remains at the forefront of the times amid profound changes in the global landscape and continues to serve as the unshakable backbone of the Chinese people in the face of both domestic and international risks and challenges.

On this new journey, we must bear in mind the principle that to forge iron, one must be strong oneself; cultivate a keen political awareness that the Party’s comprehensive and rigorous self-governance is an ongoing endeavor; take the Party’s political development as the overarching guide; continue to advance the new great project of Party building in the new era; constantly strengthen and refine the Party’s organizational system; focus on building a high-caliber contingent of cadres who possess both moral integrity and competence; unswervingly promote efforts to foster a clean and honest Party conduct and combat corruption; resolutely eliminate all factors that undermine the Party’s advanced nature and purity and eradicate all “viruses” that erode the Party’s healthy body; ensure that the Party remains untainted, unchanged in character, and true to its original aspirations and mission; and ensure that, throughout the historical process of upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, the Party will always serve as the strong leadership core!

We must comprehensively and accurately implement the principles of “one country, two systems,” “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong,” “Macao people governing Macao,” and a high degree of autonomy; ensure the central government’s full exercise of its governance authority over the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions; put in place the legal systems and enforcement mechanisms for safeguarding national security in the two regions; uphold China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests; maintain overall social stability in the Special Administrative Regions; and ensure the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao.

Solving the Taiwan question and realizing the complete reunification of the motherland is the Chinese Communist Party’s unwavering historical mission and the common aspiration of all Chinese sons and daughters. We must uphold the One-China principle and the 1992 Consensus and advance the process of the peaceful reunification of the motherland. All sons and daughters of the Chinese nation, including our compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, should work together in unity and solidarity, resolutely thwart any separatist schemes seeking “Taiwan independence,” and jointly create a bright future for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. No one should underestimate the Chinese people’s unwavering resolve, firm will, and formidable capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity!

The future belongs to the youth, and our hopes are pinned on them. A century ago, a group of young pioneers ardently carried the torch of Marxist thought, tirelessly seeking the path to national rejuvenation in a China shrouded in darkness and turmoil. Over the past hundred years, under the banner of the Communist Party of China, successive generations of Chinese youth have devoted their youthful aspirations and struggles to the cause of the Party and the people, emerging as the vanguard in the great endeavor to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Young Chinese in the new era must regard the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as their own responsibility, strengthen their ambition, integrity, and confidence as Chinese citizens, and live up to the times, to their youthful years, and to the earnest expectations of the Party and the people!

A century ago, the Communist Party of China was founded with just over 50 members; today, it has grown into the world’s largest ruling party, boasting more than 95 million members, leading a nation of over 1.4 billion people, and wielding significant global influence.

A century ago, the Chinese nation presented to the world a scene of decline and desolation. Today, it showcases to the world a vibrant and thriving vitality, advancing with an unstoppable momentum toward great rejuvenation.

Over the past century, the Communist Party of China has delivered an outstanding performance to the people and to history. Today, the Party, united and leading the Chinese people, has embarked on a new journey to achieve the Second Centenary Goal.

Comrades of the Communist Party of China!
