Insomnia is profoundly distressing and directly impacts both work and daily life. It can also precipitate other medical conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, depression, metabolic disorders like diabetes, and endocrine disorders involving thyroid dysfunction. Insomnia is, in essence, the body’s cry for help.
The causes of insomnia are complex.
Insomnia is closely related to the five zang organs and six fu organs. For example, conditions associated with the heart include deficiency of heart spirit, restlessness of the heart spirit, and excessive heart fire; those associated with the kidney include yin deficiency with hyperactive fire; and those associated with the liver include liver qi stagnation transforming into fire. All of these patterns can give rise to insomnia.
Insomnia can also arise when the body exhibits three conditions: deficiency, dysfunction, and stasis. Deficiency refers to qi deficiency, yin deficiency, blood deficiency, and the like; dysfunction denotes disturbances in metabolism, endocrine function, and other physiological processes; and stasis encompasses phlegm-stasis, qi stagnation, and blood stasis, among others. These three aspects are directly linked to high work stress, a fast-paced lifestyle, emotional instability, and unhealthy living habits.
Cervical spondylosis is also one of the causes of insomnia.
After insomnia, individuals may experience palpitations, headaches, and marked mental fatigue, which not only impair work efficiency but also reduce quality of life. Preventing problems before they arise is the best approach. It is essential to cultivate an awareness of preventive care; once insomnia has become severe, subsequent interventions will be much more difficult to implement.
It is advisable to prevent insomnia early.
Regulate emotions
A large proportion of insomnia cases are attributable to emotional and psychological imbalance. One should learn to take a broader view of matters, try to worry less, and especially avoid severe or sudden anger. Anger harms the liver; since the liver and kidneys share a common origin, damage to the liver can in turn impair the kidneys. When kidney yin is deficient, heart fire becomes excessive, leading to disharmony between the heart and kidneys and consequently sleep disturbances.
Balanced Diet
Pay attention to your dietary pattern and strive for nutritional balance. Eat less cold, cooling, and spicy foods.
Balance work and rest
Excessive rumination harms the spleen; when the spleen and stomach are out of harmony, sleep is disturbed at night. Reduce late nights, go to bed early, and ensure adequate sleep.
Use your phone less.
The carotid and vertebral arteries, which supply blood to the head, pass through the neck; therefore, cervical spine health is crucial for adequate cerebral perfusion, and many individuals with insomnia have underlying cervical spine issues. Prolonged forward-head posture while using a smartphone is a major contributor to cervical spondylosis and one of the factors that can lead to insomnia.
Supplement Yang Qi
Get more sunlight, try moxibustion, or massage acupoints yourself. For those with weak constitutions, massage Baihui, Qihai, Guanyuan, and Zusanli. If there is phlegm-dampness in the body, add Fenglong; for women, also add Sanyinjiao.
