Key Identification Points for Wind-Resistant Traits

The Chinese medicinal herb Fangfeng is the dried root of Saposhnikovia divaricate (Turcz.) Schischk., a plant belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is primarily produced in provinces and autonomous regions such as Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Ningxia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Shandong in China. The root is used medicinally and is one of the renowned crude drugs in Northeast China. It has the effects of dispelling wind and releasing the exterior, eliminating dampness and relieving pain, and arresting spasms. Clinically, it is mainly employed for the treatment of common cold with headache, rheumatic bi syndrome with pain, urticaria with pruritus, and tetanus, among others. Next, let us examine how the Chinese Pharmacopoeia identifies the crude drug Fangfeng and its processed slices.

The medicinal material is shaped like a long cone or a long cylinder, tapering gradually toward the base; some specimens are slightly curved, measuring 15–30 cm in length and 0.5–2 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown, rough, with longitudinal wrinkles, numerous transverse lenticels, and minute root scars in the form of punctate protrusions. The root head bears conspicuous, densely arranged annular markings, some of which still retain brownish-tan, hair-like leaf bases. The material is lightweight, loosely textured, and easily broken; the fracture surface is uneven, with a light-brown cortex marked by fissures and a pale-yellow xylem. It has a distinctive odor and a slightly sweet taste.

The processed herbal slices are thick, round or oval in shape. The outer surface is gray-brown or brownish-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles; some specimens exhibit transverse, elongated lenticel-like protrusions, dense annular markings, or remnants of hairy leaf bases. The cross-section shows a brownish-yellow to brown cortex with fissures, and a yellow xylem featuring radial纹理. The aroma is distinctive, and the taste is slightly sweet.
