[Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Fight Against COVID-19] Rising to the Challenge: Grassroots TCM Practitioners in Hebei Province Stepping Up as the Vanguard of Pandemic Response!
Following the outbreak, grassroots TCM medical institutions in Hebei Province responded swiftly and rose to the challenge, demonstrating the sense of responsibility and commitment inherent in TCM practitioners—
The emergency response mechanism has been activated, and the province has entered a wartime state. At the start of the new year, the COVID-19 outbreak in Hebei Province has captured the attention of the entire nation.
The current COVID-19 outbreak in Hebei Province is progressing rapidly, with most cases concentrated in rural areas, placing immense pressure on grassroots prevention and control efforts.
Under the shadow of the pandemic, grassroots TCM medical institutions in Hebei Province responded swiftly, mobilized urgently, and rose to the challenge. Despite the bitter cold, they carried out nucleic acid testing and leveraged the unique strengths of TCM in epidemic prevention and control, demonstrating the sense of responsibility and commitment of grassroots TCM practitioners.
Medical staff at the Shijiazhuang Gaocheng Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital are collecting pharyngeal swabs from residents.
Integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment is a major feature of the current wave of COVID-19 care.
Following the outbreak, Shijiazhuang Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital dispatched experts from departments such as Pulmonary Diseases and Pediatrics to the designated treatment hospital—the Fifth Hospital of Shijiazhuang—to conduct multidisciplinary consultations for COVID-19 patients and to prescribe TCM formulas for the treatment of asymptomatic COVID-19 infections.
On January 8, in accordance with epidemic prevention and control arrangements, confirmed patients from the Fifth Hospital of Shijiazhuang were transferred to the Hebei Provincial Chest Hospital. The Shijiazhuang Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital once again dispatched a medical team consisting of five core TCM specialists from the Pulmonary Department—Yang Guang, Zhang Yujing, Ma Chao, Ma Xuanwen, and Cui Cui—to the Hebei Provincial Chest Hospital to participate in patient care; currently, treatment efforts are proceeding smoothly.
“We have yet to see a clear inflection point in this outbreak,” said Ma Yujun, Acting Mayor of Shijiazhuang, at the second press conference on COVID-19 prevention and control in Hebei Province held on January 9. “The epidemic is still spreading, with no signs of abating, and the risk of further transmission remains.”
Practical experience in Wuhan, Hubei Province, has demonstrated that early intervention with traditional Chinese medicine at the preventive stage can significantly reduce the likelihood of suspected COVID-19 cases progressing to confirmed cases. In February 2020, by distributing herbal decoctions and proprietary Chinese medicines to individuals with fever, those under medical observation, suspected cases, and close contacts, Wuhan effectively averted a large-scale outbreak.
During the current COVID-19 outbreak in Hebei Province, all traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) healthcare institutions have placed great emphasis on the use of TCM preventive decoctions. The Shijiazhuang Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has distributed 37,840 bags of the Luhua Anti-Epidemic Decoction, 2,095 anti-epidemic sachets, and 230 moxa sticks to key areas and priority populations, while also implementing TCM-based preventive interventions for hospitalized patients, staff, and outpatients.
Staff in the Pharmacy Department of Xingtai City Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital worked overtime, meticulously measuring, compounding, soaking, and decocting herbal ingredients according to the preventive TCM prescription formulated by the hospital’s epidemic prevention and control expert panel. After more than 20 hours of diligent effort, nearly 3,000 bags of TCM decoctions were prepared and promptly distributed to frontline medical personnel. Meanwhile, the Zhongyi Hospital in Neiqiu County, Xingtai City, has also prescribed preventive TCM formulas for susceptible populations, frontline workers, and those in quarantine, which are then decocted and distributed free of charge; to date, 2,800 portions of these TCM decoctions have been dispensed.
We are confident that, with the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals, the shadow of the epidemic will eventually lift. Once again, we pay tribute to the tens of thousands of grassroots TCM practitioners who are working on the front lines of epidemic prevention and control.
