Integrated Chinese and Western medicine is being used in treatment, with 100% of the 130 cured cases in Beijing receiving TCM intervention.

On the afternoon of July 13, Beijing held the 150th press conference on novel coronavirus pneumonia prevention and control.

According to Wu Guoan, Deputy Director of Beijing Ditan Hospital, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the clinical features of this outbreak continue to be those of a “damp-toxin epidemic” characterized by dampness obstructing the spleen and stagnating in the lungs. During the summer, the concurrent presence of summer heat further transforms the dampness into heat, damaging both qi and yin. Therefore, treatment focuses on dispelling dampness, clearing heat, and detoxifying while simultaneously reinforcing the body’s vital energy and facilitating the expulsion of pathogenic factors. For mild and moderate cases, treatment is primarily based on traditional Chinese medicine—either in the form of decoctions or patent medicines—combined with ear acupressure using seeds, which can rapidly alleviate clinical symptoms, achieve clinical recovery, or prevent mild cases from progressing to severe illness, thereby halting disease progression. In severe and critically ill patients, integrated Western–Chinese medicine care is employed, with TCM emphasizing the reinforcement of vital energy and consolidation of yang, drainage of lung qi and unblocking of the bowels, detoxification and nourishment of yin, as well as awakening the spirit and opening the orifices. Through syndrome differentiation and individualized treatment, each patient receives a tailored therapeutic plan, helping them more quickly wean off mechanical ventilation and ECMO support, reducing the risk of secondary bacterial infections, and improving the success rate of resuscitation. Among the 130 confirmed cases discharged after recovery, the participation rate of TCM in treatment was 100%.
