On June 24, Lian Weiliang, Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, led a delegation to the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine for a research visit and symposium, which was attended by Yu Yanhong, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Lian Weiliang fully commended the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine for its significant contributions to the development of TCM. He pointed out that the Party Central Committee and the State Council have always attached great importance to the development of TCM; General Secretary Xi Jinping has issued important instructions, and Premier Li Keqiang has given key directives, thereby promoting the inheritance, innovation, and development of TCM. During the prevention and control and treatment of COVID-19, TCM has played a vital role and has earned widespread recognition and support from the general public.
Lian Weiliang emphasized that the National Development and Reform Commission has thoroughly implemented the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee and, in collaboration with the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is vigorously promoting the high-quality development of TCM. Moving forward, it is essential to intensify research and focus on achieving “three integrations”: the integration of TCM and Western medicine; the integration of public-service orientation with market-based mechanisms; and the integration of the strengths of the national team with the enthusiasm of local authorities and enterprises. In addition, ten concrete initiatives must be effectively carried out, including the Famous Doctors’ Clinics Project, the TCM Inheritance and Innovation Centers, and the University of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Yu Yanhong pointed out that the National Development and Reform Commission has thoroughly implemented the “Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on Promoting the Inheritance, Innovation, and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine” and the spirit of the National Conference on TCM. The “three integrations” and the “ten practical measures” it has put forward embody the new development philosophy, represent targeted policies to address the key constraints hindering the development of TCM, and have greatly boosted the confidence and resolve of the TCM sector in revitalizing and advancing TCM. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, with strong support from the NDRC, significant progress was made in the development and construction of TCM. Moving forward, the TCM industry must seize opportunities, conduct systematic research, consolidate the foundation, address existing shortcomings, take proactive steps, and ensure effective implementation.
Lian Weiliang and his delegation conducted on-site inspections of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, the Artemisinin Research Center, the Chinese Medicinal Resources Center, and the Institute of TCM Information. Huang Luqi, President of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, presented a report on the achievements of the Academy’s development during the 13th Five-Year Plan period and its strategic vision for the 14th Five-Year Plan period, followed by remarks from responsible officials of several secondary-level institutes.
